Ottertail home destroyed by fire, owner in jail for arson
A rural Ottertail man has been charged with first-degree arson after setting his home on fire Saturday.
The Minnesota State Fire Marshall and Otter Tail County Sheriff's Office said Cody Dahl, age 35, gathered up flammable materials in the attached garage of his home and lit them on fire. He reportedly used a lighter and accelerant.
The blaze was reported by a neighbor at about 9:40 p.m. The Long Lake Road home was deemed a complete loss.
More than 35 firefighters from Ottertail, Perham and Battle Lake responded to the scene. Ottertail Fire Chief Stuart Fleischauer said the house was already fully engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived. The fire rekindled Sunday morning and was again extinguished.
Fleischauer said there was no one inside the home at the time of the fire and there were no injuries.
Dahl purportedly left the home right after setting fire to it and was later pulled over by county deputies. Authorities have not yet determined a motive for the fire.
The fire remains under investigation.
