Loyalty Day recognized in Wadena April 23

Wadena Mayor George Deiss, center, signs a proclamation for Loyalty Day in the city of Wadena April 23 at City Hall with VFW Post Commander Kevin Tendall, left, and VFW Post member Jim White.

Loyalty Day will be celebrated Saturday, April 23 at the Wadena VFW.

It is a specific occasion when all American citizens should publicly reaffirm their complete loyalty to America, according to a brief history provided by the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Loyalty Day was designated as May 1 but it will be celebrated April 23 in Wadena. A program Saturday will include several speakers, including Department Commander Duane Hermanson, Department President Millie Lauer and Wadena Mayor George Deiss. Sixth District officers will be installed Saturday as well.

The first Loyalty Day was in 1955 after it was adopted by Congressional Act.

The VFW encourages citizens to promote Loyalty Day by speaking at events, displaying flags, reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and promoting volunteerism in the community.
