Two teenagers killed in Highway 71 collision
Two teenagers were killed Wednesday evening when their car was struck broadside by a truck on Highway 71 south of Bemidji in Hubbard County.
According to the Minnesota State Patrol, Jacob Bruns, 16, of Laporte was southbound on Highway 71 around 6:30 p.m. when he lost control of the 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt he was driving on icy blacktop and was struck broadside by a northbound 2011 Nissan truck driven by Jay Shannon, 53, of Park Rapids. Bruns was killed in the crash along with his passenger, 16-year-old Kiara Renollette of Bemidji. Shannon was seriously injured and was transported to Sanford Health in Bemidji.
Assisting agencies included the Beltrami County Sheriff’s Office, the Hubbard County Sheriff’s Office and the Bemidji Police Department.
