Wadena Pioneer Journal accepts Pickled Herring Challenge

The Wadena Pioneer Journal was challenged to participate in a Holiday Eating Challenge by our friends and colleagues at the Morris Sun Tribune and Hancock Record. We accepted the challenge - see the sampling here.

Pickled herring, a Scandinavian delicacy, is made by curing herring with salt and vinegar before adding flavorful ingredients as garnishes, depending on the recipe. These could include dill, onion, chili flakes, bay leaves or sour cream.

While some fans of pickled herring eat it throughout the year, it’s traditional to eat it during holidays, such as Christmas.

The newspaper staff has now issued a Pickled Herring Challenge to the Mitchell Daily Republic. If they decline, they're asked to make a donation to the Wadena Empty Stocking program.

Other organizations who participated in the challenge include the the Worthington Daily GlobeAlexandria Echo PressBrainerd Dispatch, Grand Forks Herald and West Central Tribune.
