Two liquor licenses approved by city council

The Wadena City Council gave the green light to two restaurants for the liquor licensing process.

Los Jalapenos, which re-opened in place of El Tequilas with a new name and new ownership, will have to wait for the state approval now. The council approved the city's part of the liquor license contingent on Police Chief Bruce Uselman's investigation which had not been done at the time of the council meeting. The other aspects of paperwork had been completed.

During the March 13 meeting, Swenson said the state turnaround would be about two or three weeks.

A liquor license for the soon to be re-opened Nite Owl was also on the council agenda, even though there was no further information on paper by the time of the meeting.

Mayor Wayne Wolden said he talked to previous owner Lindsey Gustafson, and the new owners of Nite Owl have experience in the restaurant industry and want to see the business succeed.

The council approved to give the license as the restaurant gets the application in order.

City Administrator Brad Swenson said the action would allow the city to process the application as it arrives, rather than waiting a few weeks.

In other business, the council:

• Approved keeping precinct lines as they are for redistricting. Swenson said that since the city council members are elected at large, and not with a ward system, the precincts aren't required to be exactly the same size. Precinct 1 has 1,522 people, Precinct 2 has 1,155 people and Precinct 3 has 1,345 people. The smaller Precinct 4 is in Otter Tail County.

• Approved a Joint Powers Agreement with the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension which gives the city the authority to work with the Bureau.

• Accepted with regrets the resignation of Mac Nelson from the fire department.

• Approved Midway Ford of Roseville for a new pickup for the electric department at a cost of $19,222.88 plus sales tax of $1,321.47, which was under the $24,000 budgeted.

• Approved transferring money from the General Fund to Capital Projects for bookkeeping.
