Norenberg, Lannes attend National FCCLA conference

More than 7,500 nationwide members, advisers, alumni, and guests of Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA), gathered in San Antonio, Texas, July 6-10 for the 2014 National Leadership Conference.

This conference was themed "Soar" and challenged members to reach for the sky and soar to new heights. FCCLA members nationwide attended outstanding workshops, took part in a variety of competitive events, visited vendor exhibits and explored the many "must see" sites of San Antonio.

Throughout the five-day convention, participants examined and discussed several critical issues, including family, school and community violence prevention, physical as well as financial fitness, future career exploration and countless community service projects. The Wadena-Deer Creek FCCLA chapter traveled to San Antonio; student attendees included Hope Norenberg and Shania Lannes. Norenberg was recently elected as the MN State FCCLA Public Relations Chairperson. She attended Leadership Training for state officers as well as acting as the voting delegate for the Minnesota delegation. With the other Minnesota state officers she assisted in running the meetings of the MN delegation. Lannes was selected to judge the Chapter Showcase STAR Event.

A numerous amount of youth issues, such as the developing roles of men and women in the home and workplace, leadership amongst peers and adults, childhood hunger and issues related to premature child birth were available to explore and visit throughout the conference. This were presented in forms of presentations, workshops, youth sessions, and competitive events. Including inspirational and motivating speakers that remind us to lead a legacy, opposed to merely leaving one.

Norenberg, who is a junior at Wadena-Deer Creek High School, will continue to work with other FCCLA members and advisers in Minnesota to encourage peers to discover their potential, set targets for their future career goals, and initiate a plan to ignite youth leadership in the community.
