SARA HACKING
Saying goodbye to the PJ and my byline
“I thought you were in Hawaii?” is a question I’ve been asked a lot lately. Not yet, but almost.
I’ll be married in a week. By the time the paper hits the streets on Saturday, I’ll no longer be an employee of the Pioneer Journal.

Bachelor pad is simple and Spartan — for now
Man may not be able to live by bread alone, but it appears milk, pop, apple juice and water are sustenance enough — at least for a bachelor. These meager staples were the only contents of the fridge when I visited my fiance in Hawaii in May.

Change brings fear and excitement
The first words I heard about my future home in Hawaii were “nice, I like it” from my fiance an hour after he set eyes on our rented condo April 7.

A fan of the fans in April
April is the season for fans to admire the players on the diamond. It’s also the season for those not inclined to don foam fingers to admire the fans.

Adding a little spice to my life
Little did I know when my brother’s best friend from high school e-mailed me last spring how much spice would be added to my life.

Winter Sara runs into summer Sara
I lead a double life. Actually, it’s more like my life is divided in two. There’s winter Sara and there’s summer Sara.

Sweeping cultural changes covered in the pages of old PJs
If I was a man of consequence in Wadena in 1949 I would be known as S.M. Hacking. If I was a married woman in 1969 I wouldn’t have a first name.December 03, 2009
Showers, baby preparation part of being auntie
September was dry, but for me it was filled with showers. No umbrellas were required, though. Just lots of presents wrapped for baby.October 02, 2009
A simpler time on the swingset
Whether it’s made from a rope looped around a tree or a slab of rubber chained to a metal bar, a swing is just the thing to take summer into fall.September 02, 2009
Memories of that special Hewitt home
Sweet-scented pineapple weed is a certain calling card for my favorite summertime memories.August 05, 2009
Home-grown pesto a convenient delight
Fresh herbs make summer cooking fragrant and fun. A taste of basil from a pot outside my door along with other herbs generously supplied from parents’ yard liven up pasta dishes and more.July 08, 2009
Dad: a surprisingly complicated creature
Father’s Day cards define dads by six basic topics — sports, lawn care, tools, beer, recliners and the remote control. While a chord of truth can generally be struck with most dads on at least one of these themes, the punch lines don’t tell the whole story.June 10, 2009
Walking on the wild (Wadena) side
Please don’t kill me. The little walking man is lit up and beckoning me to step through the crosswalk. I just want to get from the Boondocks corner to Larry’s Family Pizza.May 13, 2009
