When God chopped down the lemon tree, she made lemonade

When God chopped down the lemon tree, she made lemonade When a tall tree — a veritable monarch among trees on Jefferson Street in Wadena for the past 100 years with a 26-inch trunk — fell victim of the July 17 tornado, it missed hitting owner Leann Scalia, by a mere 3 or 4 feet.

An appreciation for national parks

An appreciation for national parks This week’s favorite activity was husking corn outside under our big trees. Canning corn, long before the deep freezer came on deck, was remembered by our ladies while the men leaned more toward memories of growing it. Woessner was at Ben Franklin for 55 years PressPass

This was a fine busy week at Fair Oaks Lodge even if it was a bit too warm, with activities both inside and outside. A fox found one of our feeders last week while a wild turkey came to check them out this week. We love it when those wild critters come up to make friends with us.

Gored by bull, Richards reinvented himself PressPass

Gored by bull, Richards reinvented himself When Charles (Chuck) Richards opened his eyes that bleak and gray November day in 1978, searing pain took over. What happened? Why was he in this glaring, blindingly white room? This wasn’t his cow lot. And, where was his barn?

Storm stories in the Fair Oaks halls PressPass

The stormy weather easily took center stage at Fair Oaks Lodge this week. The folks were all hustled into safe inside halls several times. Putting Buddy Bird, my Peachfaced Lovebird, on my shoulder, I headed over to be with them. If we were all doomed to fly into space, I wanted to be with my Fair Oaks folks. I noticed Administrator Roberta Cline must have felt that way, too.

Meet Buddy Boy, the Peachfaced Lovebird PressPass

When the folks at Fair Oaks Lodge have to leave their homes for one reason or another, parting with pets is among the things they regret most. There is something about nonjudgmental affection, the kind a pet has to give, that cannot be duplicated any other way. It is why pets are always welcome.

The day the first TV arrived at Fair Oaks PressPass

This time of year brings back memories of a particular spring morning in 1970, more than 40 years ago. It was a residents’ council meeting that, quite unaware, ushered in a new era under our big roof. One that not only prevails, but to this day is getting ever more sophisticated.
