• The law firm of Kennedy, Nervig, Carlson & Van Bruggen, LLP, in Wadena, announced that Malcolm Whynott has joined the firm as an associate. Whynott is a graduate of the Hamline University School of Law and earned his undergraduate degree at the University of Wyoming. He previously clerked for Judge Sally I. Robertson from February 2008 to September 2009 in Wadena. Whynott joins attorneys Charles Kennedy, Luther Nervig, Paul Carlson and Matthew Van Bruggen at Kennedy, Nervig, Carlson & Van Bruggen, LLP, 503 South Jefferson Street, Wadena, and will practice in the areas of probate, estate planning, real estate and family law. • The Tri-County Hospital Foundation recently awarded two Larry Mayer Memorial Scholarships to Derek Holden, Menahga, and Christopher Weber, Staples. Two $500 scholarships were awarded to these second-year radiology technology students to assist in funding their education. Holden is a student at Jamestown College in Jamestown, N.D. Weber is enrolled at M State – Detroit Lakes. Larry Mayer served as Diagnostic Imaging Department manager at Tri-County Hospital from 1973 until 2000, when he passed away suddenly. The family of Larry Mayer and the Tri-County Hospital Governing Board established the Larry Mayer Memorial Scholarship in 2001 to encourage qualified individuals to pursue a healthcare career in radiology. • Leaf River Ag Service, a sales agency with Pioneer Hi-Bred has donated a $500 scholarship to Clinton R. Swisse at Wadena-Deer Creek Senior High. Leaf River Ag Service was awarded this scholarship money for its dedication to customer-focused activities throughout the year. Swisse plans on attending University of North Dakota this fall.

• On May 9, Wadena Lodge 156 held its annual scholarship dinner at the Pine Cove Inn. Past Grand Master the Rev. Terry Tilton was the speaker and Worshipful Master Kenneth Friese was the master of ceremonies. Minnesota Masonic Charities, the former Verndale Lodge Fund and Wadena Lodge 156 combined to give four $500 scholarships to senior applicants from Bertha-Hewitt, Eagle Valley, Henning, Sebeka, Verndale, and Wadena-Deer Creek schools. This year’s scholarship winners were Jayme Godding, Eagle Valley, Nicole Bart and Matthew Moenkedick, Verndale, and Clinton Swisse, Wadena-Deer Creek. • The following area students were named to the Minnesota State University Moorhead dean’s list for spring semester 2009: Eric Asfeld, Kathryne Breid, Samantha Martus, Dana Motschenbacher and Aaron Taggart, all of Wadena; Courtney Bernu, of Deer Creek; Lindsay DeLeeuw and Molly Moenkedick, of Verndale; and Samantha McGrane, of Bluffton. • The following people were winners of $50 gift certificates from the American Legion drawing: Steve Peterson, Merickel’s; Jim Stoneman, True Value; Tony Uselman, Weber’s Hardware; Christa Peterson, Super One; Ted Fischer, Super One; Liz Erickson, Grocery Store; and Don Simmons, Grocery Store. • Bemidji State University announced that Amy Brown, Heather Haman and Kayla Kephart of Wadena have accepted a $1,000 Academic Achievement Scholarship from the college for the 2009-10 academic year. The school also said Brown and Haman accepted a $1,000 Campus Honors Scholarship. • Each year, Lakewood Health System gives scholarship awards to area high school students who will be pursuing careers in healthcare. The 2009 Lakewood Health System and Lakewood Clinic Scholarship recipients, their hometowns and the healthcare career which they wish to pursue include: Kelsey Booth, Verndale, Nursing; Amy Brisson, Browerville, Dentist; Hallie Denning, Staples-Motley, Social Worker; Ryan Denny, Bertha-Hewitt, Physical Therapy; Katlin Krause, Pillager, Nursing; Elizabeth Wilgohs, Staples-Motley, Speech Pathology; and Courtney Zimmer, Eagle Valley, Nursing. • Kelsey Booth of Verndale has accepted a $1,000 Campus Honors Scholarship from Bemidji State University for the 2009-10 academic year. Booth will be a freshman majoring in nursing. • The following area students were named to the Minnesota State University Mankato dean’s list for spring 2009: Megan Hejhal, Verndale, high honors; Jessica Davis, Wadena, honors; Dexter Jenson, Wadena, honors; Falon Kern, Wadena, honors; • St. Mary’s University in the Twin Cities announced that Lance Matthew Mayer, of Wadena, received his master’s degree in education at the June 7 commencement. • Kyle Thomas Timm, of Wadena, received a bachelor’s degree in organizational management on Saturday, May 16, from the University of Minnesota—Duluth. • Amy Brown of Wadena has accepted a $1,000 Leadership Scholarship from Bemidji State University. Brown will be a freshman majoring in secondary mathematics education.

Ashley is a 2006 graduate of WDC High School, and is the daughter of Gordon and Terri Fix of Wadena. • Alissa Johnson, of Wadena, was named to the dean’s list at Hamline University for the spring term. Johnson, who is majoring in history, is a graduate Wadena-Deer Creek High School and is the daughter of Henry and Patricia Johnson of Wadena.

• Angela Johnson, a native of Wadena, participated in the College of St. Catherine’s spring commencement ceremonies held May 21 and 23 in St. Paul, Minn. Johnson was awarded a doctor of physical therapy degree. She is the daughter of Henry and Pat Johnson, also of Wadena. Johnson is a 2003 graduate of Wadena-Deer Creek. • Bert Nelson, of New York Mills, has been hired by the Fargo General Office of New York Life Insurance Company as an agent for the company. Nelson is a member of New York Mills Lions Club and has a degree from Fergus Falls Community College and Wadena Technical College. He has worked the last 18 years in the newspaper industry selling advertising. Nelson has resided in the New York Mills area for more than 20 years. • Tyler Harrison Koestner of Franklin, Tenn., was among graduates who received degrees at the 160th Commencement Exercises of Rhodes College on May 16. Koestner graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor of science degree in chemistry. The son of Mr. and Mrs. James A. Koestner of Franklin, Tenn., he also was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. Koestner is the grandson of Erna Harrison of Wadena.
