Namedroppers Kate Schmidt, daughter of Kent and Shaneen Schmidt, is advancing to the final level of competition in the Minnesota Music Teacher’s State Piano Competition. Kate is competing with the piece “Festival in Aragon” by Lynn Freeman Olson, and is a student of Jackie Tellers. • Elizabeth Quincer has been named to the fall semester 2009 dean’s list at Concordia College in Moorhead. • Matthew Peterson, of Wadena, was named to the fall semester dean’s list at Northwest Technical College. • On Friday, Feb. 19, the Minnesota Chapter of the German American Chamber of Commerce awarded four scholarships valued between $250 and $1,000 to four Minnesota high school students who won this year’s GACC German Essay Writing Contest. The winners were Corbin Gillen from Maple Grove High School, Jenna Blake from Wayzata High School, Yalonda Nelson from Wadena-Deer Creek High School, and the first prize winner Thomas Schultz from Mora High School. The awards were presented during a dinner celebration at the German American Institute on historical Summit Avenue in St. Paul.

Namedroppers • Five piano students of music instructor Wendy Lindlief participated in the West District Minnesota Music Teachers Association Piano Contest at the University of Minnesota, Morris, on Jan. 23. All were declared winners and will advance to the state competition at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis on March 13-14.

• Alissa Johnson, of Wadena, was named to the dean’s list at Hamline University for the fall term of the 2009-10 academic year. Johnson, who is majoring in history, is a graduate Wadena-Deer Creek High School and is the daughter of Henry and Patricia Johnson of Wadena. • Adam C. Sartell, of Wadena, a graphic design student at the School of Fine Arts, University of Minnesota — Duluth, was named to the fall semester dean’s list. • Junior girls stater Andrea Jensen attended the meeting of American Legion Auxiliary 283 of Deer Creek recently and spoke about her experiences while attending the national Girls State convention in 2009. Elinor Wiscow is the Auxiliary 283 girls state chairwoman. • The following area students were named to the M State president’s list for fall semseter 2009: Melissa Perius and Amanda Redning, of Verndale, Theresa Edwards, Sara Kawlewski-Reece and Emily Pete, of Wadena, and Jeffrey Cooney, of Sebeka.

Sly, of Wadena, who is pursuing a degree in English at Northwestern, and Heather N. Walsvik, who is pursuing a degree in graphic design at Northwestern. • North Dakota State University announced the following dean’s list students from fall semester 2009: Sarah Taylor, of Deer Creek, and Bjorn Berg, Emily Hunt, Jennifer Kraemer, Michael Riewer, Shelby Tabery and Dennis Theisen, all of Wadena.

• Minnesota State University Moorhead announced that Stacey Richter, of Sebeka, received a bachelor’s degree in history, and Tina Krueger, of Wadena, received a bachelor’s degree in marketing at the college’s Dec. 18 winter graduation ceremony. • Amy Brown, of Wadena, became a freshman senator in the Bemidji State University Student Association Student Senate, the official representative and governing body of the students at BSUSA. The purpose of the Student Senate is to promote the student role at Bemidji State University and to work with the university administration in the development of campus policies affecting students.

• Nolan Buresh, of Wadena, who is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Milwaukee School of Engineering, was named to the school’s fall quarter dean’s list. • State Sen. Dan Skogen receives a Certificate of Merit from Hiedi Hoks, past president of the Minnesota Library Association, at their annual convention in St. Cloud. Skogen was honored by the MLA for his work to increase access to public and school libraries in Minnesota. • Northwestern College in St. Paul announced that Crystal Vorderbruggen, daughter of David and Beckie Vorderbruggen of Wadena, will be participating in the Song and Dance tour, a concert series of 20th century symphonic wind repertoire featuring the Symphonic Band along with the Jazz Ensemble. Tour dates and locations are as follows: Tuesday, Jan. 5 in Lake Mills, Iowa Thursday, Jan. 7 in Story City, Iowa Saturday, Jan. 9 in Waterloo, Iowa Thursday, Jan. 14 in St. Paul, Minn. Vorderbruggen is a senior pursuing a degree in instrumental music ed/special ed and is a 2005 graduate of Wadena-Deer Creek High School.

• The law firm of Kennedy, Nervig, Carlson & Van Bruggen, LLP, in Wadena, announced that Malcolm Whynott has joined the firm as an associate. Whynott is a graduate of the Hamline University School of Law and earned his undergraduate degree at the University of Wyoming. He previously clerked for Judge Sally I. Robertson from February 2008 to September 2009 in Wadena. Whynott joins attorneys Charles Kennedy, Luther Nervig, Paul Carlson and Matthew Van Bruggen at Kennedy, Nervig, Carlson & Van Bruggen, LLP, 503 South Jefferson Street, Wadena, and will practice in the areas of probate, estate planning, real estate and family law. • The Tri-County Hospital Foundation recently awarded two Larry Mayer Memorial Scholarships to Derek Holden, Menahga, and Christopher Weber, Staples. Two $500 scholarships were awarded to these second-year radiology technology students to assist in funding their education. Holden is a student at Jamestown College in Jamestown, N.D. Weber is enrolled at M State – Detroit Lakes. Larry Mayer served as Diagnostic Imaging Department manager at Tri-County Hospital from 1973 until 2000, when he passed away suddenly. The family of Larry Mayer and the Tri-County Hospital Governing Board established the Larry Mayer Memorial Scholarship in 2001 to encourage qualified individuals to pursue a healthcare career in radiology.
