The Wadena-Deer Creek Drama Department will present "Just Another High School Play" on Nov. 17, 18 and 19 on the stage of the historic Wadena Memorial Auditorium.

Written by Bryan Starchman, "Just Another High School Play" is a comedy that covers nearly every angle of a typical high school play with a dose of history and improvisation thrown in for good measure.

WDC Drama Director Jay Patterson said what's unique about this play is the student cast has the freedom to fill in the blanks and add their own lines to the script.

He said the basic premise of the play is that the drama director (Mr. Patterson) has hightailed it out of town. He wants to become a professional salsa dancer — it's his dream job for retirement.

"The drama students are stuck with having to produce something that resembles entertainment for the crowd that has shown up," explains Patterson. "So here comes improvisation and a valiant attempt at being a poor excuse for actors."

The play weaves Hamlet, characters from The Christmas Carol (Scrooge, Tiny Tim), Romeo and Juliet, and a plethora of misfits who try to get it right.

Patterson said the play has received rave reviews in other schools, not to mention his own theater students.

"The play is a lot of fun, but it's been a lot of work too," said Raine Curtis, a junior, who plays three different characters.

Students in grades 7-12 are involved in the all-school production, from acting to technical support, and they include: Elliot Doyle, Nancy Medina, Emma Mehl, Katelyn Gardner, Sara Goetze, Ashley Kern, Jasmyn Wood, Michael Schmidt, Devyn Norenberg, Liz Peterson, Raine Curtis, Soren Wedde, Siobhane Touchette, Jeffrey Umland, Grace Mertens, Logan Taggart, Ben Keppers, Laura Mortensen, Taylor Dirks, Esther Berger and Gabriel Berger.

Patterson has directed plays since the late 1970s and continues to immerse himself in theater each school year here at WDC. He is in his 24th year of serving as WDC's theater director.

The public is encouraged to see these young, talented thespians perform at Wadena Memorial Auditorium on Nov. 17, 18 and 19. Performance times are 7:30 p.m. Tickets will be sold at the door only - $5 for adults and $3 for students.
