Local concert group has an entertaining deal for you

Body:

The cost of high quality, live entertainment can be high enough to deter many from enjoying the arts available in local theaters.

But imagine paying one flat rate, basically the cost of just one show, and imagine that cost covers entry to over 20 top-notch performances in the region. Sound like a good deal?

That's a reality coming true with a recent deal made available by the Wadena Area Concert Association (WACA).

The association received a grant from the J. Harold and Edythe Peterson Family Foundation to help them promote the upcoming series. The regular price of membership is $45 and the discounted price available through Oct. 7 is $25 for a single and $50 for a family. That deal is good for new memberships, who have not been members in the last three years. According to WACA president Bonnie Kingsley that's an awesome bargain.

This bargain deal is being pushed in order to drive up membership, which has been waning in recent years.

"We are trying to get more bodies in the seats," Kingsley said.

In some cases, there's been 100-150 open seats in the Memorial Auditorium, where the Wadena shows are performed. And while Kingsley likes to see seats filled, she likes even more to see people enjoying some of the same entertainment you'd find in New York City, at a greatly reduced price. She said some of the upcoming performances will have people out of those seats and dancing in the aisles.

WACA has been active in Wadena for over 60 years. Once the program boasted 550 members but is closer to 350 at this time," according to Kingsley.

"I'd hate to see this program die a slow death," Kingsley said. A dwindling membership means fewer shows, while a growth in membership would mean even more shows could be added to the season.

The first Wadena concert of the year is Oct. 6. There are five shows in Wadena, but you can see a total of 22 shows, as the WACA membership includes reciprocity with Fergus Falls, Alexandria, Park Rapids and Sauk Centre concerts.

Shows are touted as family friendly and the variety assures you'll see a totally different show each time.
