Entertainment briefs - May 8 edition

Friendly Squares dance slated for May 9

The Park Rapids Friendly Squares will have their last square dance for the season on Friday, May 9. The dance will be at Century School. Larry Johansen will be calling beginning 7:30 a.m. The mainstream dance will be held from 8 to 10 a.m. Donna Stone will cue rounds between tips. Club members will serve potluck lunch after the dance. All square dancers and spectators are welcome.

Norman Kennedy in concert May 8

Don't miss the opportunity to hear Norman Kennedy in concert at the Cultural Center in New York Mills on May 8 at 7:30 p.m.

It is not often the Center is able to host a folk artist who has performed at venues such as Carnegie Hall and the Newport Jazz Festival. Call (218) 385-3339 for reservations.

Mature Mile/Family 5K slated for June 7

Perham Living will host a Mature Mile and Family 5K Fun Run/Walk on June 7. The event is geared to be inclusive for all ages — one to 100 — and to encourage health and wellness at all stages of life.

The Mature Mile is an untimed event for those 60 years or older. The race will begin at 11 a.m.

and the route will loop around the Perham Living campus and several additional community blocks before returning to the Perham Living campus. All are welcome to participate regardless of fitness level, including individuals with assistive devices such as walkers and wheelchairs.

The Family 5K Fun Run/Walk is a timed event for friends and family members of all ages and fitness levels. The timed race will begin at 10 a.m. at Perham Living and will incorporate the community's new Wellness Trail and Wildflower Trail prior to returning to Perham Living.

Pre-registration for both races is $12 per person through May 25 and may be completed online or in person at Perham Living, or in person at the Perham Area Community Center. Participants may also register onsite on June 7 prior to the event for $15 per person. The registration fee includes a t-shirt, medal, and refreshments. Copper Street Brass Quintet to play May 12

The Copper Street Brass Quintet will perform with the New York Mills Senior High band and jazz band at the James W. Mann Auditorium in New York Mills on Monday, May 12 at 7:30 p.m.

Minneapolis-based Copper Street Brass Quintet combines classical music with jazz, pop, and rock. The concert will include selections from their touring program, called "Evolution in Concert," and is one of the main events for The CSBQ's May 9-12 educational residency at the New York Mills public schools. During the two-day residency, the quintet will perform for elementary, junior high,and high school students, and will also lead brass masterclasses - giving the students of New York Mills the unique opportunity to work closely with professional musicians. The concert is free and open to the public.

A free will offering will be taken to support the New York Mills public school music programs. This educational residency and concert is funded in part by the Lake Region Arts Council through the Minnesota Arts and Cultural Heritage fund. For more information, visit
