Author Linda Koutsky at the Wadena City Depot on April 12

A program featuring author and book artist Linda Koutsky will be held Thursday, April 12 at 7 p.m. at the Wadena City Depot. Koutsky and Kathryn Strand Koutsky are the authors of "Tempt Me: The Fine Art of Minnesota Cooking." The book is a recent release from the Minnesota Historical Society with first-rate illustrations, vintage advertising, bygone recipes and the storied history of Minnesota's food industries.

This program is the first in this year's Spring Legacy Series. It is presented by the Wadena County Historical Society in collaboration with the Wadena Library with a grant from Kitchigami Library System. This free Legacy Program is funded in part or in whole with money from the vote of the people of Minnesota on Nov. 4, 2008 which dedicated funding to preserve Minnesota's arts and cultural heritage.

The Spring Legacy Series also includes "Alice in France" by author Nancy Weber on May 11 and "Minnesota Moxie" by the author Ben Weber on June 17. This program is also a collaboration with the Wadena Library.

Other programs this spring include "Minnesota Voices" held each month, the third Thursday at noon at the Wadena Museum. The April 19 program will celebrate National Poetry Month with readings by Minnesota poets. The Wadena County Historical Society's semi-annual meeting will be held this spring on April 25 at 7 p.m. The featured speaker will be Denis Gardner, director of the Minnesota State Historic Preservation Office. All the programs are free and open to the public.

April 1 deadline to submit original poetry

April 1 is the deadline for area poets to submit an original poem which may be selected for reading at "Minnesota Voices" on Thursday, April 19 at noon at the Wadena County Museum as part of National Poetry Month. Between 10 to 15 poems will be selected by the panel. The guidelines for submission are as follows: Only poems written by the poet will be considered. The poem should be no more than 30 lines. The poem may be in any form: rhymed, free verse, prose, rap, etc. The poem may have been previously published. The poets selected will be invited to read their poem at the event on April 19. You are not required to be present in order to be selected. Instead, the poet may elect to have the poem read by a member of the panel. Submissions should include your name, address, email, the title of the poem, and the complete text of the poem. Please indicate whether you will be present to read the poem on April 19. Submissions must be postmarked or received by April 1 to be eligible. Poets selected will be notified by April 5.
