Zelma (Sam) Chloe Detwiler
Zelma "Sam" Chloe Detwiler was born on July 23, 1913 in Heron, South Dakota. Her parents were the late Edwin and Della (Cox) Detwiler. Sam grew up on the family farm in Heron. She graduated from Heron High School with the Class of 1931. In 1932, the Detwiler family made their home in rural Deer Creek, Minnesota where they purchased a farm. Sam was united in marriage to Benard Herman Oldenettel in 1933 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Deer Creek, Minnesota. They made their home in Deer Creek and farmed until 1963. Sam was employed for a short time at the Wesley Hospital in Wadena, Minnesota as a nurses aide. From 1959 to 1977 Sam was employed as the bookkeeper at the Deer Creek School District. She enjoyed keeping busy and continued to work as a bookkeeper at the Otter in Ottertail and then at Bettys Pantry in Ottertail, baking pies and bookkeeping, only to retire when she was 92 year of age. She enjoyed talking with family, taking family dogs for a walk. She was very talented and loved painting the details on ceramics. She also loved crossword puzzles. On January 22, 2014 Sam passed away at the Golden Living Center in Henning, Minnesota. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends. Preceding Sam in death were her parents; husband; grandson, Lowell; sisters: Grace, Agnes & Winifred; brothers: Robert, Manny, John, Ervin & Wayne.
Sam is survived by her daughters: Betty "Pat" Cordes of Ottertail & Roxanne "Mike" Buising of Ottertail; brother, Edwin Detwiler of Two Harbors; 7 grandchildren: Vanessa, Mark, Michael, Shannon, Todd, Tonya and Shane; 6 great-grandchildren: Missy, Nick, Kayla, Gunner, Carter and Kenzi other relatives and a host of friends.
