It's no secret that times are tough, really tough. However, I'd rather light a candle than curse the darkness.

It might not feel like it, but there are plenty of reasons to be optimistic about the future of Wadena. And those reasons are the proud people of this community that continue to put a smile on their face and go out there and try to make things just a little better.

If you don't believe me, just go see Brittney Schmitz or Nikki Kneisl over at Glamour salon. Those young women have opened a shop to be proud of, and they are. Or you could stop by the new Mall of Wadena, ask them how things are going. They just might tell you things are getting better everyday! If you take a look at what they've done with the place, you might agree. Or, maybe, you could stop by Leaf River Ag, and talk with Scott Dau. You might find out that's quite an operation they've got over there. Maybe even drop in on Dr. Anderson over at Woodland Dental and see the faith he's shown in the community with the remodeling he's done, but call ahead, you need an appointment. Or, better yet, you could meet Mary Jo Barbato or Jeff Preuss over at Innovative Surfaces, a one-of-a-kind plant that makes one-of-a-kind table tops, right here in Wadena. The list could go on and on.

The point is, all of these people have made a choice. They've chosen to be optimistic about the future of Wadena. I challenge the rest of us to follow their lead. The next time we're faced with a chance to talk about what's wrong with Wadena, let's choose to see if we can't think of something that's right with Wadena. After all, tough times don't last, but tough people do.
