Yellowjackets sting Wolverines 64-12
The Perham Yellowjackets won 12 of 14 weight classes Tuesday in a 64-12 rout of Wadena-Deer Creek.
WDC's state-ranked wrestlers, Sam Waln and Mitch Steffens, chalked up pin points for the Wolverines. Waln beat the final buzzer by 12 seconds in his 120-pound match with Chase Curtis. Steffens pinned Jeramiah Asmund at the 2:54 mark of their 126-pound match. Both WDC wrestlers improved to 3-1 on the season.
A pair of stall calls gave Elliot Werner a hard-earned 6-5 victory over WDC's Tristin Godel at 106.
Two state-ranked wrestlers met at 220 and Perham's Cody Nylander caught WDC's Tony Reurink extended on his back. It was the second meeting in four days for the two wrestlers. Nylander edged Reurink 9-8 for top honors in the Wolverine Invitational on Saturday.
The Wolverines forfeited in four weight classes.
Norm Gallant's wrestlers will compete in the Big Bear Invitational Dec. 16-17 at Cass Lake-Bena.
WDC grapplers place seventh in Wolverine Invitational Saturday
The Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines captured six finishes in the Top Six Saturday as they placed seventh in the annual Wolverine Invitational.
Badger-Greenbush-Middle River won the team title with a 201.5. Perham was second with 189.5. WDC and Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale placed seventh and eighth respectively with scores of 101.5 and 97.
Tristin Godel, Sam Waln, Mitch Steffens and Tony Reurink gained runner-up honors for the Wolverines at 106, 113, 120 and 220. Devin Barthel was third at 126. Jacob Ludovissie was fifth at 160.
Godel defeated Perham's Elliot Werner 5-1 to reach the 106-pound finals but the WDC freshman came up short in a 13-5 loss to BGMR's Wyatt Becker in the finals. Waln pinned Staples-Motley's Alex Erpelding at the 1:13 mark and crushed BGMR's Devin Dostal 12-0 before losing on a fall to Pequot Lakes/Pine River-Backus standout Tristan Rubner in the finals. Steffens saw his first mat action since January and wrestled his way to the finals where he fell to former state champ Isaac Novacek of BGMR 7-3. Reurink pinned his first man in 16 seconds and went on to face Class AA's No. 2 ranked grappler, Cody Nylander, in the finals where Nylander squeaked out a 9-8 victory on a late takedown.
Barthel had a pin and a technical fall gaining his third place finish.
Dillon Card and Colin Turchin paced Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale with third place finishes at 182 and 285.
