Yellowjackets cruise past Wolverines
State-ranked Perham warmed up for a second straight berth in the Class 2A state basketball tournament Friday by trouncing Wadena-Deer Creek 60-32 on the Concordia College court in Moorhead.
Friday's game was originally slated to be played on the Perham court but both teams benefitted from a game at Concordia's Fieldhouse. The Yellowjackets, who are ranked second in the state, have a long way to go if they hope to successfully defend their Class AA state title. The second round of the South Sub-Section 8AA playoffs will be held at Concordia Saturday night at 6:30 and 8 p.m. A victory on Thursday night against Hawley would send the Wolverines against the Perham-Frazee winner Saturday.
Dave Cresap's Yellowjackets improved to 22-2 in Friday's 28-point victory that was sparked by a defense that held the Wolverines to just 32 points for just the second game this year. Defense has been a speciality of Cresap's clubs. They are giving up an average of just 43 points a game as the playoffs open.
The Yellowjackets also won the three-point shooting battle hands down sinking 10 to WDC's one. "Perham's defense was very good and we struggled to get good shots," WDC Head Coach Tom VanErp said. Andrew VanErp was the only WDC cager to score a field goal in the first half, dropping in three deuces and one trey. Evan VanErp and Ryan Redfield combined to go six for eight at the free throw line.
The Perham shooters turned up the gas in the second half with Jordan Cresap scored 12 of his 15 game points. Big Mark Schumacher finished with 12. The Yellowjackets had nine players contributing to the scoring.
After being held scoreless in the first half, WDC post Ben Birch netted nine points in the second. Andrew VanErp was held to three points but when the final buzzer sounded the eighth-grade standout still led WDC's four-player scoring effort with 12 points.
