Kimberly Dawn Preuss, 28, was traveling east in the area of the railroad bed, the Otter Tail County Sheriff's Office said. The train crew reported they observed the Alero between the two sets of railroad tracks not meant for vehicle traffic at the intersection of U.S. Highway 10 and Otter Tail County Road 143. They applied the brakes and used the train's horn, but struck the car in the back end.

The Bluffton Fire Department used extrication equipment to remove Preuss from the vehicle. The sheriff's office said she escaped serious injury, but was taken to Tri-County Hospital in Wadena for evaluation and later released. She was wearing her seatbelt.

The sheriff's office reported alcohol was a contributing factor to the crash, and said DWI charges are pending against Preuss. The crash happened around 4:30 a.m.
