It was slam, bang, boom Tuesday as the Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines opened their 2012 softball season with a 21-3, five-inning rout of the Bertha-Hewitt Bears.
The Wolverines ended the game in five innings with an 11-run explosion in the fifth.
Avery Jackson, Morgan Lugert and Sam Killian all collected two hits as the Wolverines out-hit the Bears 13-3 on the Bertha softball field. Jackson doubled, scored twice and drove in three ribbies. Lugert crossed home plate three times and drove in two runs. Killian swung a big RBI bat driving in three runs and scoring twice.
Caitlin Volkmann went the distance with five strikeouts against three walks.
The Bears were guilty of 11 fielding errors on the windy afternoon. The Wolverines committed just two miscues.
"Melissa Moenkedick did a great job at first base," WDC Head Coach Craig Klawitter said.
The game was originally slated for April 20 but favorable playing conditions prompted the two clubs to move the game to March.
The Bears were caught without No. 1 pitcher Autumn Aeling. The senior standout was just cleared to play after an injury. Bertha-Hewitt Head Coach Janelle Bright went with freshman Hannah VanHale and turned to senior Allisa Thiel after two frames.
