The Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines walked away winners Tuesday as they opened their 2009-10 season with a 58-49 victory over Pierz.

Avery Jackson pumped in 19 points to lead the WDC scoring effort but it was defense that held the Pioneers at bay in the first half, allowing the hometown team only 15 points.

Courtney Volkmann netted 13 points while Rachel Craig canned 11.

Rachael Craig led the team with eight while Craig had seven and both Jackson and Kelsi Crawford grabbed six. Jackson, Toedter and Volkmann all had four steals. Jackson and Hannah Toedter had five assists apiece.
