Wolverines top Pelican Rapids cagers 69-60
Tom VanErp's Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines ended the regular season on a winning note last Friday with a 69-60 victory over Pelican Rapids.
Scott Syverson led the way with 23 points and a 10-for-10 night at the foul stripe. Jordan Reed checked in with 20 points. Randy Nelson and Kevin Tumberg came up with 11 and 10 points respectively. The Wolverines shot 47 percent from the field as a team, canned six of 15 treys and went 15 of 21 at the foul line.
"I thought we controlled the tempo and we shot well," VanErp said. "Scott made his free throws down the stretch and put the game away.
The Vikings hurt themselves with poor three-point shooting. The Vikes were just two of 14 from outside the arc for an icy 14 percent. They hit a respectable 45 percent of the field goal shots and shot well at the line, going 14 for 19.
Four Pelican cagers scored in double figures led by Casey Bruggeman with 17. Ryan Huseby had 14 points while Luke Halbakken and Taylor Budge scored 10 points apiece.
The Wolverines forced 24 turnovers and out-rebounded the Vikings 25-24.
The victory gave VanErp's club a final season record of 10-14. The Vikings ended their year at 12-14. Last year's Pelican team won the Class AA state championship with a perfect 33-0 mark.
