Wolverines take two from Rangers
Craig Klawitter saw his Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines explode for 24 hits Tuesday in a 7-5, 8-0 Mid-State Conference sweep of Crosby-Ironton.
Caitlin Volkmann sparked the Wolverines in Game 1 as she went 3-for-3 at the plate, doubled twice and drove in three runs. Sam Killian and Samantha Manselle combined for four hits and two runs.
Kerra Gritner, Molly McCusker and Kassandra Wisely all had two hits in the loss. Kaitlyn Johnson drove in a pair of runs.
Volkmann went the distance to gain the victory. The senior righty scattered 11 hits while walking three and fanning four.
Victoria Witthuhn pitched a six-hitter as the Wolverines came up with a shutout victory in Game 2. Witthuhn did not allow any C-I batter more than one hit. She walked one and fanned three in her complete game effort.
Killian, Katelyn Peters and Ashley Tuttle all doubled in the victory. Killian went 2-for-3 at the plate and drove in three runs. Michaela Lehmkuhl was 3-for-4 while Manselle was 2-for-3.
The sweep gave the Wolverines a 3-8 season record.

Katie White threw a two-hitter in Game 1 and drove in four runs in Game 2 Monday as the Patriots clubbed the Wolverines.
White walked two and fanned four in her two-hit gem. Caitlin Volkmann was touched for 14 hits and 10 runs in the loss.
Lindzee Johnson went 3-for-4 in leading the 14-hit Pequot Lakes attack. Johnson doubled twice and homered as she drove in six runs. Taylor Miller, Hannah Jacobson and Jessica Kreitz combined for nine hits, five runs and three RBIs.
Morgan Ziese and Brooke Umland were the only WDC players to collect hits.
White parked a three-run blast in the third inning of the nightcap. She also singles in a run in the second.
Michaela Lehmkuhl collected a solo home run and a triple for WDC. Lehmkuhl was 2-for-2 at the plate and drove in three run.
Johnson went the distance to gain the pitching win for Pequot Lakes. Johnson fanned three while walking only one.
Victoria Witthuhn had control troubles and walked nine in suffering the loss. Volkmann pitched the final inning for WDC.

Staples-Motley 11-6, WDC 1-9
The Wolverines shook off an 11-1 shellacking in the opener to beat Staples-Motley 9-6 in eight innings Friday and gain a split in their Mid-State doubleheader.
Kelsey Zetah, MacKenzie Holst and Jessica Tomann paced the Cardinals in Game 1 as they combined for seven hits, six runs and six RBIs.
Michaela Lehmkuhl and Brooke Umland came up with WDC’s two hits off Staples-Motley hurler Megan Vetsch.
Caitlin Volkmann got into trouble in the third when the Cards erupted for eight runs. Volkmann allowed 11 runs in the loss but only three were earned.
Lehmkuhl went 2-for-3, tripled, scored three runs and drove in three as the Wolverines claimed the second game.
Lehmkuhl’s triple scored two of WDC’s three runs in the bottom of the eighth. Killian brought in Lehmkuhl with a single. Killian was WDC’s top hitter with three safeties in five trips to the plate. Volkmann and Katelyn Peters combined for three hits, two runs and two RBIs.
Claire Uhlman tripled, went 3-for-4 and drove in two runs for Staples-Motley. Zetah, Holst and Tomann combined for six hits, two runs and two RBIs.
Witthuhn chalked up the win despite allowing 11 hits and five walks.

Autumn Roberts tossed a one-hitter and EmaLeigh Roberts had a huge day at the plate May 2 as the Eagles stopped the Wolverines in a five-inning contest.
Volkmann singled in the first inning for WDC’s only hit off Roberts. The New York Mills hurler did not allow a walk while striking out six.
The Eagles hammed out 13 hits with EmaLeigh Roberts going 4-for-4 with a home run, four RBIs and four runs.
Brittany Lee, Lydia Irons and Mckenna Roberts combined for six hits, seven RBIs and two runs in the win. Rhiana Roberts went 2-for-3 at the plate and scored twice.
