Wolverines suffer 29-22 setback
The Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines put four quarters of football together for the first time this year in a 29-22 loss to Crookston last Friday.
Aaron Kern put the Wolverines in a position to win their first game since the 2007 season with touchdown runs of three and 44 yards in the fourth quarter.
Josh Edlund's second touchdown run of the night, from 10 yards out, put the Pirates up 29-14 with 8:42 left to play.
The Wolverines pulled off an onside kick in the final quarter that gave them field position on Crookston's 49. A vital fourth and one pass hit the ground and the Wolverines turned the ball over on downs.
Kern had 111 yards rushing on 21 carries.
Colter Pettit put WDC's first touchdown on the board early in the second quarter when he scooped up a faulty exchange and scooted 37 yards for a touchdown.
Jordan Rentz had another big defensive game for the Wolverines with eight tackles and three assists. Isaiah Toedter balanced seven solos with seven assists. Kern and Pettit combined for 11 tackles and eight assists. Cody Redfield was credited with six solo stops and two assists.
Kenny Sakry was perfect on his three extra point attempts.
Ben Curran opened the scoring for the Pirates with a 59-yard gallop in the first quarter. Brandon Lyczewski capped the first period scoring with a 42-yard interception return.
"We played a whole game," WDC head coach Tom VanErp said. "The kids battled for four quarters."
