Wolverines suffer 22-21 loss in home opener
It all came down to a two-point pass Thursday night as the West Central Area Knights snuck by Wadena-Deer Creek 22-21 in the season opener for both clubs.
Dakota Kashmark's conversion flip to Drew Peterson capped a wild second quarter and gave West Central Area the edge they needed with 26 seconds remaining in the first half.
On a warm, humid summer evening, Tom VanErp's Wolverines struck first after Mason Lohmiller blocked a punt that was recovered on WCA's 21 by Nick Carlson. Logan Meyer cashed in on a five-yard scamper at the 1:49 mark of the first quarter.
The Knights set off a furious scoring duel at the 5:54 mark of the second quarter on a 22-yard jaunt off left tackle by Trevor Telkamp.
Evan VanErp put the Wolverines on top again with a 31-yard run at the 3:35 mark.
It was WCA's turn next as Dustin Buss hooked up with Kashmark for a 65-yard scoring play.
Meyer, who logged a lofty 175 yards on 23 carries, busted off a 79-yard TD run to put the Wolverines on top 21-14.
Peterson came right back to scoring on the ensuing kickoff with an 89-yard scamper.
Jacob Ludovissie led the Wolverines with nine tackles and four assists. Meyer came up with eight tackles. Jake Krause picked off the game's only interception and added five tackles and four assists.
"They played their hearts out," VanErp said of his short-handed squad. "We played well but we ran out of gas late in the second half. In the fourth quarter it looked like we were running in quicksand."
The Wolverines travel to Barnesville Friday for a Prairie North game. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
