Wolverines rack up sweep of Mid-State doubleheader

The Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines put together 25 hits May 6 downing Mid-State foe Crosby-Ironton 12-9 and 16-5.

Ricky Price triggered a Wolverine rally in Game 1 by going 3-for-4, scoring twice and driving in a pair of runs.  Wyatt Weber went 2-for-3 in the leadoff spot, scored twice and drove in a run.  Jake Dykhoff and Thomas Brekke carried the bottom half of the lineup by combining for four hits, three runs and three RBIs.

Noah Gindorff and Ben Jordan paced the Rangers at the plate in the first game with three hits in four trips, two runs and one RBI apiece. Ryan Sharp, Mike Minarich and Ben Anderson combined for six hits four runs and three ribbies.

Zac Schertler started on the hill for the Wolverines and earned the win. Schertler gave the Wolverines five innings of work. The sophomore right-hander surrendered 11 hits and three walks but only four earned runs while striking out five. Tanner Horn pitched the last two frames for the Wolverines to pick up a save.

The Wolverines found themselves trailing 8-3 in the top of the fifth before erupting for nine runs in the bottom half of the inning.

“We showed our youth in Game 1 with four ugly innings, followed by three great innings,” WDC Head Coach Kyle Dykhoff said.

The Wolverines exploded for 10 runs in the second to win the nightcap 16-5 in five innings.

Isaac Laughlin helped his own pitching cause in Game 2 by going 4-for-5 at the plate, scoring three times and driving in a run. Price was 3-for-4, scored three times and drove in three runs in the cleanup spot. Weber came up with two hits and two runs in the win. Schertler and Dykhoff combined for three hits, three runs and four RBIs.

Laughlin went the three innings and gained the win. Michael Behl pitched the final two frames.

“We came ready to play in Game 2 and got the bats going early, which gave Laughlin and Behl the chance to come in and be aggressive on the mound.” Dykhoff said.

Sharp and Joe Sura had two hits apiece for C-I while Gindorff drove in two runs.

The sweep boosted the Wolverines to 4-2 in the conference while dropping the Rangers to 1-8.
