Wolverines pull off 62-61 victory over Cardinals
Evan VanErp poured in 25 points as the Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines edged Staples-Motley 62-61 in a Mid-State Conference tilt.
The Wolverines were leading by four with five seconds remaining. The Cardinals tossed in a 25-footer at the buzzer to cut the final score to one.
"It was just a good high school basketball game," WDC Head Coach Tom VanErp said.
The Cardinals hurt themselves in the first half by converting only four of their 18 shots in the paint. The Cards improved their two-point shooting dramatically in the second half and finished the game outscoring WDC 26-14 in the paint.
The Wolverines scored on 11 of their 29 three-point attempts for a healthy 38 percent. The Cardinals took 31 three-point shots and made eight for a 26 percent average.
Andrew VanErp tacked up 15 points and Jacob Goeden scored 12 for the Wolverines, who evened their Mid-State mark at 1-1.
Brian Huber netted 20 points for the Cardinals. Seth Auger and Jalen Busker combined for 27.
"Wadena was quicker than we were," Staples-Motley Head Coach Ray Gildow said. "We're trying to get back to a man-to-man philosophy, but that means you have to work harder."
The Wolverines improved to 3-2 on the season. The loss dropped the Cardinals to 2-2.
