After breezing past the Wolverines 25-14 in Game 1, the Otters found themselves with a different foe in the second game. WDC grabbed a 14-8 lead before the Otters were able to get on track and pull out a 25-20 win. The Otters also had to scramble in Game 3 before claiming a 25-18 victory.

“I thought we played very well,” WDC Head Coach Sue Volkmann said. “We ended the season on a high note that we can take into next year.”

The Wolverines have fought injury troubles all year and the lineup they put out on the court against the state-ranked Otters was a new one. Danyel Post came up with 11 kills while Hope Theisen had 24 digs and Autumn Jahnke combined with Lauren Soroko for 22 set assists. Soroko and Mikaela Nordlund teamed up for nine of WDC’s 17 blocks.

Brianna Rasmussen and Laura Gaustad backed Monke up with eight kills apiece. Rasmusson also had a team-high 18 set assists. Devonie Smith led the Otters with 23 digs.

The Otters earned the right to move on against Barnesville but while the Fergus crew will be losing eight of their players to graduation the Wolverines will lose only one – defensive gem Hope Theisen.

“She’s had a great career and she’ll take away a lot of memories,” said Volkmann, who guided four WDC teams to state with Theisen aboard.

The Wolverines closed out their 2013 season with a 6-24 record.
