Wolverines finish strong, look to postseason
Courtney Volkmann had nine serving aces and Kelsi Crawford contributed 13 kills as Wadena-Deer Creek wrapped up the regular season Tuesday night with a 3-0 victory over Frazee.
"I think we finished strong and I thought we played just an excellent game against DGF," said WDC head coach Sue Volkmann, who credited her captains, Courtney Volkmann and Rachael Carlisle, for their leadership. "That just shows how our maturity has grown. We are ready to go into tournaments. Hopefully we will have that same success."
The Wolverines have had their sights set high all season after winning the section title last year and earning a trip to the Class AA state tournament. WDC's perfect record against section competition is unmatched.
"We don't have that dominant team in the section but we have some real competitive teams in the section," Volkmann said.
The Wolverines took the first and third games by 25-12 margins and dominated the second game 25-7.
Volkmann also had a team-high 20 assists and 13 digs. Rachel Craig had a strong defensive game with nine blocks, Craig and Brittney Noon combined for 12 kills. Kelly DeFoe and Rachael Carlisle each contributed four blocks. Hope Theisen and Caitlin Volkmann combined for 15 digs.
The state-ranked Wolverines will be off for a week before opening the defense of their Section 8AA title. WDC ended the season with 24-4 record. WDC finished 8-0 against section opponents. The Wolverines will open tournament play Thursday, Oct. 29, on their home court. They also have a Friday night game at home if they advance.
