The Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines ran into a buzzsaw Dec. 3 in their season opener with Mid-State foe Staples-Motley.

Mackenzie Holst, Grace Wolhowe and Mikayla Wing all came up with 18 points respectively for the defending Mid-State Conference champs. Wing and Wolhowe carried the shooting attack in the first half. Wing tacked up 12 of her game points while Wolhowe canned 16. Holst led the Cardinals offensively in the second half with 11 tallies.

Hope Theisen was WDC's top gunner with seven points while Rylie Langer added six. The Wolverines were seven of 36 from the floor for a cool 19 percent.

The WDC cagers pulled down 23 rebounds with Carrie Nelson leading the way with seven. Theisen and Jennifer Craig combined for 11.

"The Wolverines are a very young team and the Cardinals capitalized on their mistakes," WDC head coach Keith Ferris said. "With a young team we need to focus on the little things. There was a lot of things that we did well, but there is a lot that we need to work on."

Theisen is the only senior on this year's WDC squad. Ferris also has two juniors, seven sophomores, two freshmen and one eighth-grader on the team.

Following a trip to Detroit Lakes the Wolverines will travel to Hawley on Thursday.
