Wolverines earn shot at second straight section title
The Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines were left with just one more bridge to cross Tuesday night in Park Rapids after beating rival Perham 3-0 for the South Section 8AA championship.
The Wolverines will be facing perennial powerhouse Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton Saturday in a 7 p.m. match at Hawley. Two years ago, it was DGF crushing Fergus Falls for the section title at Hawley. Last year, it was WDC topping East Grand Forks at Hawley for a trip to state.
WDC and DGF ran into each other Oct. 21 in Glyndon and the Wolverines, who played one of their strongest game of the season, came away with a 3-1 victory.
"DGF is a senior-dominated team and very good," WDC head volleyball coach Sue Volkmann said. "We played exceptionally well at DGF and won that game, but they will come ready to play. We are going to have to play very well again against them. They have some good hitters and block extremely well. We need to have a good blocking game to slow their hitters and we need to attack aggressively."
The Rebels stopped Roseau 3-0 Tuesday for the North Section 8AA crown. Tessa Tysver's club will bring a 20-9 record into the Hawley gym.
"I kind of consider us the unerdogs," Tysver said. "We are going to pass well, we are going to have to serve-receive well and we will have to play a clean game. You can't beat a great team like Wadena-Deer Creek with a lot of errors."
Morgan Mathison, one of eight seniors on the team, is DGF's most versatile player, according to Tysver. The senior standout is the club's top setter and a strong outside hitter. She had 14 assists and 13 digs against Roseau. Senior outside hitter Sara Anderson is a great hitter at the net. She led the Rebels with eight kills in their victory over Roseau.
Courtney Volkmann had 11 kills and 25 assists to lead the top-ranked Wolverines past seventh-seeded Perham 25-19, 27-25, 25-14.
Unforced errors by the Wolverines in Game 2 took the match into high school volleyball's version of overtime. Tuesday's victory marked the second year in row that the Wolverines have advanced to the section finals by topping Perham. Last year it took a three-game rally from a 2-0 deficit to beat the Yellowjackets.
"With Perham in volleyball it has become a big rivalry and both teams, no matter what are records are, really want to beat each other," Volkmann said.
Brittney Noon chipped in with 10 kills while Kelsi Crawford contributed eight.
Rachel Craig led WDC at the net defensively with 12 blocks. Hope Theisen tied Avery Jackson with 12 digs. Volkmann had 10 digs.
The victory boosted the Wolverines to 26-4 overall.

Brittney Noon led the team with 10 kills and joined Mandy Perkins in coming up with three ace serves. Avery Jackson was the team's dig leader with 11. Kelly DeFoe and Rachael Carlisle combined for 15 blocks.
