Wolverines collect fourth place finish at Xcel Center

One year after they brought home a state championship, the Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines earned fourth place honors in the Class AA state volleyball tournament.

The Wolverines fell to Jordan 25-17, 26-24, 25-13 Saturday in the battle for third place.

WDC Head Coach Sue Volkmann felt that losing the second set to Jordan was the decisive one in the three-game match.

"We led 24-21 and we didn't put it away," Volkmann said.

Kelsey Chambers led Jordan's comeback by putting down three kills. Chambers finished the match with 21 kills. Paige Smith added 12, Emily Miron collected 14 kills in the loss. Brittney Noon came up with nine kills.

Marshall 3, WDC 1

Top-ranked Marshall shook off a 25-23 loss to the Wolverines in Game 2 for a 3-1 victory in Friday's semfinal round match at the Xcel Energy Center.

Going into the match as the underdogs, the Wolverines lost a 25-18 decision in Game 1 before claiming the second set 25-23.

"I would have to say we played our best game against Marshall," WDC Head Coach Sue Volkmann said. "They were just a better team."

Kenzie Beekman was a force for the Tigers with 24 kills while Morgan McKittrick added 18 and Sydney Griffin came up with 10.

WDC's Emily Miron led all players in kills with 25. Brittney Noon contributed 12.

Both teams received good defensive play. Caitlin Volkmann led the Wolverines with 20 while Hope Theisen had 19 and Avery Jackson supplied 15. MccKittrick led the Tigers with 18 digs. Beekman and Hannah Bennett had 17 apiece.

WDC 3, Visitation 2

The unranked Blazers surprised the fourth-seeded Wolverines but could not put the defending state champs away in Thursday's quarterfinal round.

After breezing to a 25-12 victory in the opening set, the Wolverines lost 25-18 and 25-22 putting the Blazers in the driver's seat.

"In the second and third games they kind of setled in," WDC Head Coach Sue Volkmann said. "We just had everyone standing around."

The Wolverines reeled off six straight points early in Game 4 to grab a 9-5 advantage and then went on to out-score Visitation 14-10 the rest of the way for a 25-15 win.

Game 5 belonged to the Wolverines from the beginning as they scored six straight points before the Blazers could stop the strong serving of Caitlin Volkmann.

Emily Miron and Brittney Noon had 27 and 16 kills respectively while Hope Theisen led a double figure dig effort by five WDC players with 24.

Anne Debertin was Visitation's kill leader with 19 and dig leader with 20.
