Wadena-Deer Creek head coach Neil Koehler saw his club lose a 6-1 decision Tuesday in a much-anticipated match-up with New York Mills.

Koehler, who starred for New York Mills before moving on to St. John's, went up against his old team and former coach, Gary Bach, for the first time.

"The girls tried their best but it was hard with three of the top girls gone due to illness and missing school," Koehler said. "As a result, the lineup was severely shifted."

Wadena-Deer Creek's No. 3 doubles team of Sarah Najjar and Michelle Weber defeated Abby Salo and Victoria Selander 6-2, 2-6 (10-7).

A veteran Staples-Motley team won six of seven matches against the Wolverines in straight sets.

"Staples-Motley is traditionally a very strong program and this year is no exception," WDC head coach Neil Koehler said. "The girls remained composed and showed a lot of hustle no matter what the score."

Paige Hartman made Staples-Motley's Annie Kautto work for her win. Kautto won the opener 6-2 but Hartman took the second set 6-4. Kautto was a 6-0 winner in Game 3.

The Wolverines came tantalizingly close to their first victory of the year against Crosby-Ironton. The Rangers pulled out a 4-3 win by taking three of four singles matches. Second singles Macy Hartman topped Savana Fore 3-6, 6-2 (7-3). The Wolverines won the No. 1 match with the duo of Jessica Rinkel and Sam Holweger. They also claimed No. 3 doubles with Sarah Najjar and Michele Weber out-lasting Kiki Bender and Ashley Perzel.
