Wolverines bow to Melrose in season opener

Wadena-Deer Creek's Maddy Hinojos reaches second base on a throwing error in the first inning of Thursday's season opener with Melrose.

Nikki Zierden, Sandra Sprenger, Justine Revermann all scored three times as the Melrose Dutchmen defeated Wadena-Deer Creek 15-10 Thursday in the season opener for both clubs.

Revermann went 3-for-5 in the victory and five Melrose players collected two hits apiece.

The Dutchmen jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first but the Wolverines came back with five runs in the bottom half of the inning. The Wolverines were leading 7-6 in the top of the fifth when the Dutchmen erupted for seven runs.

"That's what killed us," WDC head coach Craig Klawitter said, who has what he calls a "young and inexperienced team" this season.

"We learned a lot," Klawitter added. "Everyone did something good and everyone did something bad."

Maddy Hinojos, Michaela Lehmkuhl, Morgan Ziese and Victoria Witthuhn paced the Wolverines with two hits each. Hinojos and Emery Dumpprope both scored twice for the Wolverines. Hinojos picked up a pair of RBIs in the loss.
