Wolverines bow to Class AA state runner-up in season opener
A state veteran Sauk Centre team grabbed a 35-23 half-time lead and then held the Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines at bay in the second half Tuesday en route to a 59-48 girls' basketball win in Wadena.
"Sauk is a very good team," WDC Head Coach Keith Ferris said. "I thought we played very well tonight, especially for the first game."
The Mainstreeters are coming off a 27-5 season that saw them reach the Class AA state finals before falling to Providence Academy 46-40.
Jena Klaphake paced the Mainstreeters from her guard spot with 16 points. Brianna VonWahlde tacked up 12 points in the win.
WDC's Emily Miron led all scorers with 20 points. Hope Theisen chipped in with 15. The Mainstreeters held WDC's Caitlin Volkmann, Sydney Schissel, Courntey Dumpprope, Melissa Moenkedick and Jennifer Craig to a total of 11 points.
The Wolverines shot 41 percent from the field and a healthy 66 percent from the foul line. The Mainstreeters canned seven of their three-pointers and clicked on 16 of 21 free throws for a 76 percent average.
The Wolverines are looking at a Dec. 4 home game with Staples-Motley and a Dec. 6 road contest with Perham.
