Wolverines bow to Cardinals, Yellowjackets

Jalen Busker baffled Wadena-Deer Creek  with a one-hitter as the Staples-Motley Cardinals won ends of a twinbill Saturday at Staples.

Busker struck out 15 as the Cardinals blanked the Wolverines 5-0 in the opener. Busker surrendered one hit and two walks.

Mark Kossan, Tyler Winkels and Brent Sterricker combined for five hits and four runs in the win.

Joe Wallgren was hung with the mound loss.

The Cardinals edged the Wolverines 7-6 in Game 2 as Kossan pitched a complete game.

Busker and Tyler Holub both collected two hits and scored twice.

The Cardinals improved to 8-8 overall and 5-5 in the Mid-State Conference. The Wolverines fell to 4-10 overall and 4-8 in Mid-State play.

Perham 5-8, WDC 4-3

The Class AA state runner-up Yellowjackets topped the Wolverines twice May 13 in a doubleheader with Wadena-Deer Creek on the Perham diamond.

Perham staged a two-run rally in the bottom of the sixth to win the opener. Austin Erickson gave the Yellowjackets four hits from the bottom of the lineup. C.J. Mulcahy went 3-for-4. The two hitters combined for two hits and two RBIs.

Isaac Laughlin led the Wolverines at the plate going 3-for-3 with two runs and one RBI. Wyatt Weber was 2-for-4.

Dylan Kuizel was credited with the mound win while Mike Behl suffered the loss.

Mulcahy went 3-for-3 while Josh Still, Tanner Carlson and Jake Lueders all scored twice in leading Perham past WDC in Game 2.

Alex Meyer relieved Carlson in the first inning and went the rest of the way, fanning 10 while giving up two hits and walking only one. Ricky Price started on the hill for WDC with relief help from Weber and Zac Schertler.

Weber went 2-for-3 in the loss with one run and one RBI.

“This team is coming together and we expect them to finish strong down the stretch,” WDC Head Coach Kyle Dykhoff said.
