The Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines capped one of their finest seasons last Saturday by taking consolation honors in the Class AA state volleyball tournament.

Sue Volkmann's young team not only won a match at the state tournament, they won a pair of them and ended the season 30-5 by beating Byron 3-1.

The midday match at St. Paul's Xcel Energy Center saw Brittney Noon pound down 22 kills, Courtney Volkmann record 37 set assists and Hope Theisen collect 20 digs. Kelsi Crawford contributed 13 kills for her third straight double-figure kill performance at state. Rachel Craig had eight blocks.

Volkmann was named to the Class AA all-state squad and joined Crawford on the all-state tournament team.

The Wolverines not only gave Class AA state champ Marshall trouble, they bounced back from their quarterfinal loss to the Tigers on Thursday to defeat New London-Spicer 3-1 on Friday evening.

"The kids work so hard," said Volkmann. "They realize it's not just what you do during the season but what you do in the off-season."

The Wolverines will bring 14 of their 15 players back for the 2010 season.

Crawford had 13 kills and Noon contributed 12 Friday evening as the Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines blitzed fourth-seeded New London-Spicer 3-0 to qualify for the Class AA state volleyball tournament's consolation championship.

Crawford and Noon were set up for their double figure kills by strong back row play. Hope Theisen had 15 digs while Avery Jackson and Mandy Perkins had 11. Noon and Courtney Volkmann both contributed nine digs. Volkmann was the assist leader with 26.

The victory helped the Wolverines realize their goal of posting a match victory in the state tournament. The Wolverines lost both of their state tournament games last year and qualifying for state for the first time since 1991.
