With the opening of Wolff Images on 123 S. Jefferson, there is one less vacant building in downtown Wadena.

Photographer Doug Wolff had been operating out of his house for the last nine years, but recently opened the studio in the brick building on the northwest corner of Jefferson and Bryant.

Wolff said his open house will be in mid-May, but the door is open and he has already seen customers and had a few bookings.

Photographs can be taken either in the studio or on location.

"My son is a part of this too," he said. "This isn't just my studio."

Twelve-year-old Bryce knows how to work both a video camera and a studio camera, and is learning some of the business aspects, Wolff said.

Wolff said his favorite aspect of photography is "just to create an interesting and pleasing image."

His dad gave him his first camera when he was 5 years old and he has enjoyed taking pictures ever since.

Wolff had done commercial and industrial photography in Wadena and later started working in portraits and weddings as well.

"I've been in photography for 30 years, and have had my own business for the last 17," Wolff said.

Wolff went to the School of Associated Arts in St. Paul, where he started to take photography seriously and wanted to get into advertising. He lived in the Twin Cities for a while.

"I moved to Wadena in '97. I'd gotten married, and my wife was living here in Wadena, and I was looking for a way out of the Twin Cities," he said. "So I moved up here and worked with Homecrest for quite a few years."

While in Wadena, he also had a studio in Fargo for a few years.

Wolff described photography as being more than a job.

"It's one of the few careers where it's your vocation and also your avocation," he said.
