Jared Wegscheid went over the 100-win mark in capturing the 135-pound title Saturday in the Pine-to-Prairie Invitational.

Wegscheid's milestone was not the only highlight of the tournament for WDC. The Wolverines racked up 24 pins in the tournament as they placed second behind Staples-Motley with 50.5 bonus points. Moorhead placed third.

"Wow! I think we are known as a pinning team but we have not [had] 24 in a day," WDC head coach Norm Gallant said.

Wegscheid, who already had one Pine-to-Prairie title to his credit, decisioned Staples-Motley's Sam Duberowski 3-1 in the championship match to improve his career record to 101-70. He reached the century mark by defeating Moorhead's Mike Zupan 5-3 in overtime.

Mitch Steffens also had a big invitational winning the 112-pound crown with an 18-4 major decision over Staples-Motley's Jordan Heldman. The title was Steffens' third in the Pine-to-Prairie.

Jordan Rentz made a bid for top honors in the 130-pound weight class but fell to Fosston-Bagley's Luke Conger 4-3.

Gallant felt one of the big keys for the Wolverines were the third place finishes that Zack Bernu, Jacob Ludovissie, Derrick Rude, Aaron Uselman and Isaac Lustila tacked up at 119, 145, 152, 160 and 171.

Bernu pinned Sam Haugen of Fertile-Beltrami at the 1:47 mark in their 119-pound match. Rude stopped Fertile-Beltrami's Hunter Lindberg in just 50 seconds at 152. Uselman won by fall at East Grand Forks Sacred Heart's Brent Hagen in 4:37 at 160. Lustila made it four straight pins by topping Red Lake County Central's Travis Larson at the 3:48 mark. Tyler Wohlwend gave the Wolverines their fifth pin in the 215-pound weight class when he stopped Moorhead's Jacob Trowbridge at 4:50.

Jacob Wegscheid finished fourth when he lost to Staples-Motley's Brandon Flickinger at the 1:32 mark in their 140-pound contest.

The Wolverines picked up fifth place points at 103, 189 and 275 as Sam Waln, Nolan Johnson and Dylan Anderson won their matches. Waln pinned Sacred Heart's Eddie Bushaw at the 2:59 mark. Johnson pinned Sacred Heart's Aaron Mehling at 1:28 and Anderson won by default over Tyler Tougas of Red Lake County Central.

The Wolverines were a force in the wrestlebacks, winning 11 of 13 in the placement round.

"Our kids came through. Mitch and Jared were great, but those third place finishers with all the pins did a super job," Gallant said. "Zack Bernu and Jacob Ludovissie had the best tournaments of their career so far."

Mitch Steffens, Jordan Rentz, Jared Wegscheid and Jacob Wegscheid all recorded victories behind him as the Wolverines built a commanding 33-6 lead. Steffens' victory was his 12th in 15 matches.
