During their five-year run the Wolverines won 145 of their 172 matches for a winning percentage of .843. They won the Class AA state championship in 2010 to end the season with a perfect 33-0 mark. They also took fourth-place and consolation honors in two of their state trips.

"We're going to be really young," Volkmann said. "We don't have a lot of experience. Our goal by the end of the year is that we want to say 'we really improved.'"

The Wolverines will move into the 2013 season without Emily Miron, Caitlin Volkmann, Sydney Schissel, Halley Maas, Melissa Moenkedick and Sarah Craig. Miron is playing Division I volleyball for North Dakota State and Volkmann is playing volleyball for Division III Concordia College.

Also gone from the varsity ranks this fall will be Heather Theisen. WDC's starting setter last year has opted not to play volleyball this season due to a back problem.

Heather's twin sister, Hope, who will be starting in the back row for the fifth straight year. Volkmann rates the WDC libero as one of the best defenders in state.

The Wolverines also have some varsity experience coming back in junior middle hitter Danyel Post.

"She'll be one of our main offensive players," Volkmann said. "She is a real good competitor."

Eighth-grader Casey Volkmann also saw varsity duty last year and is considered a solid all-around volleyer.

"She'll be one of our top offensive threats," said Volkmann, who intends to play her on the outside and at setter.

The Wolverines will be turning to their junior varsity players to fill the 2013 ranks. Juniors include Autumn Jahnke, Jennifer Craig, Sam Manselle, Morgan Zeise and Carrie Nelson. Jahnke will be playing the setter position while Craig and Zeise play the rightside hitting spot. Nelson is also tabbed for outside hitter. Manselle is regarded as a defensive specialist. Craig has shown potential to give the Wolverines some good scoring.

Sophomores on the varsity roster include Mikaela Nordlund and Jessica Langer. Nordlund is set for a middle hitter job while Langer, a very aggressive player, has shown Volkmann she will give WDC a good defensive player.

"She can make some really unbelievable saves," Volkmann said. "She's not afraid to hit the floor."

The Fergus Falls Otters are an early favorite for Section 8AA honors. Volkmann sees Detroit Lakes and Pequot Lakes as her team's top foes in the Mid-State Conference.
