The Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines had far too much Christmas spirit at the free throw line Tuesday night to suit Keith Ferris.

The head man of the WDC girls' basketball squad saw his team commit 26 fouls in their 67-58 Mid-State Conference loss to Detroit Lakes.

The Lakers cashed in on WDC's floor troubles by canning 20 of 30 free throw shots.

"We can't give another team 20 points from the free throw line," Ferris said.

Down 38-24 at the midway point, the Wolverines staged a strong comeback and out-scored the Lakers 34-28 in the second half.

Emily Miron had a double-double with 28 points and 13 rebounds. Caitlin Volkmann dropped in five treys en route to a 17-point scoring night. The Wolverines shot 43 percent from the field.

Courtney Hedstrom led the Lakers with 23 tallies. Kayli Muckenheim tacked up 16 points.

WDC 65, Perham 50

Caitlin Volkmann tacked up 23 points and Avery Jackson added 19 as the Wolverines shook off a 30-point loss to Staples-Motley with a win over Perham.

The Wolverines canned 51 percent of their floor shots in improving their record to 4-1.

"I was glad to see our team respond after Tuesday's loss to Staples-Motley," WDC Head Coach Keith Ferris said.

Emily Miron pulled down six boards and blocked six shots.

Katrina Moenkedick gave the Yellowjackets 25 points while Becky Stoll chalked up 12.

Melissa Moenkedick did not play for WDC due to illness.
