Wadena-Deer Creek junior high students Makena Formanek and Kelsie Pierce worked on a service project together this last winter, and now that same project has earned them a trip to a national competition in Florida.

Pierce and Formanek are members of Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA).

The eighth graders made 50 tie blankets to donate to Shriners Hospital for Children in Minneapolis.

FCCLA students who get a gold or silver ranking at a region meeting get to move on to the state level.

Formanek and Pierce took first place in their category, Chapter Service, at the state competition held in Bloomington April 19-21.

Pierce was at volleyball and not able to visit Bloomington, but Formanek was there to learn the two took the top score among the 12 projects in their category.

"I was really, really excited," Formanek said. "I didn't really know what to do, and I was shaking. Everybody was giving me hugs."

Now the girls are set to move on to the highly professional 2012 National Leadership Conference in Orlando.

From the WDC chapter, an alternate and a judge are also making the July 7-13 trip.

Along with the meetings, Formanek and Pierce can experience some of the fun things Orlando has to offer.

"We can go to Walt Disney. We have a lot of free time," Formanek said.

The girls are looking forward to the conference and meeting FCCLA members from around the country.

About 3,000 people are expected to attend.

Formanek and Pierce said they are working with area businesses to raise $3,000 for the trip, and are confident they will make the May 9 deadline.
