Because her brother had received free surgical treatment as a kid at Shriners Hospital for Children in Minneapolis, Kelsie Pierce wanted to give back.

Pierce and Mikena Formanek, eighth-graders at Wadena-Deer Creek, decided to make 50 fleece tie blankets and donate them to the hospital for other kids to use.

They purchased the fabric in September from JoAnn Fabrics in St. Cloud and had them all finished in time to take them to the hospital on Jan. 23.
