WDC students earn honors at state FCCLA conference
More than 1,000 middle and high school students gathered for Minnesota's FCCLA (Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America) annual state conference April 10-12 at the DoubleTree Hotel in Bloomington. This year's student-created theme was "Courage to Pursue; Dreams Come True!"
Students from across the state participated in STAR (Students Taking Action with Recognition) Events, participate in youth training workshops, and take interest in general sessions.
Highlights of the conference were keynote speaker, Sam Glenn. He shared his wisdom from his personal life experiences and failures. A chance encounter gave Sam a "Kick in the Attitude." Sam's energetic and humorous presentation engaged and motivated students to improve their performance in both their personal and professional lives.
Another feature of the conference was the STAR Event competition in over 45 different categories. Projects covered a wide range of current issues that addressed anything from bullying, to fitness, to traffic safety.
Wadena-Deer Creek participants were: Kendra Curtis, earning a silver medal on her Trisomy 21 illustrated talk, and Raine Curtis, earned a gold medal for her Dime Drive project.
Kayla Hanson and Kayla Peterson received a silver medal on their "Fitting In" illustrated talk. Kayla Hanson also received a silver medal on her career investigation. Jessica Langer received a silver on her job interview, and Hope Norenberg received a silver for her Chapter Showcase portfolio. The Senior Buzz team of Anissa Mench, Divina Turley, Shania Lannes, and Kayla Hanson earned a silver medal.
Hayley Maloney, Lyndsay Frisch, and Caitlin Savage were named third alternates to attend the national competition on their Go Gold for Gage and Jace chapter service project.
Angela Torkkola was named second alternate to attend the national competition for her Food Innovations project.
"Our WDC FCCLA chapter is proud of chapter members Hope Norenberg and Kayla Hanson who were elected to leadership positions in Minnesota FCCLA," said Cindi Koll, who serves as co-advisor with Sheila Winkels. "Kayla was elected as the MN FCCLA Region 6 Secretary Treasurer. Hope is the new Minnesota FCCLA State Vice President of Public Relations. Both members will have a busy and exciting upcoming year."
