With the tragic natural disaster in Haiti, Wadena-Deer Creek students, faculty and staff are cleaning out their closets by collecting gently used shoes for the children of Haiti.

From Feb. 10-12, WDC High School accepted running shoes, basketball shoes, gym shoes and lightweight hiking shoes. WDC is joining Underwood Public Schools in the shoe drive, who is leading this effort.

Donation boxes were located at both the elementary and high school if any community member would like to donate. Family and Consumer Science teacher Cindi Koll organized the effort at the high school, along with her students.

"This is a great opportunity to clean out our closets," said Koll. "But more importantly, for our students to help the children of Haiti."

At WDC Elementary, fourth-grader Allison O'Kane challenged students to join her in a day of crazy footwear for the Haitian cause.

On Feb. 12, O'Kane asked her fellow students, as well as teachers and staff, to collect wearable shoes and money for the people of Haiti. Participants could pay $1 or a pair of shoes to send to Haiti, and earn the privilege of wearing a crazy pair of footwear that day.
