WDC school board approves revised budget
The Wadena-Deer Creek school board approved organizational changes, a revised budget and a rehire offer for kindergarten teacher Deb Andrews Tuesday night at their January meeting.
Board officers for the coming year will be Steve Techam (chairperson), Ann Pate (vice chairperson, John Moenkedick (clerk) and Kent Schmidt (treasurer).
The board approved a revised budget that had a deficit of only $88,000 in the general fund. Last June, the board approved a budget with a deficit of $270,000.
"In my experience more years than not you make a budget revision," Wadena-Deer Creek superintendent Lee Westrum said. "The further you get into the year the better the numbers look."
Westrum's figures indicate the district's general fund budget has shrunk from $10,499,831 to $10,398.547 while revenues have climbed from $10,229,149 to $10,398,547.
"You make your revisions and then you build your budget off those numbers which are more accurate," Westrum said.
Westrum said the administration's current plan is to have a preliminary budget ready for the board at their February meeting.
Andrews is a kindergarten instructor who is currently in her 34th year with the district. If she chooses to retire after the 2013-2014 school year, the board voted to re-hire her on a Step 1 contract.
The board also approved a lane change for 5-12 counselor Toni Kraska.
