WDC raises $5,997 for Zach Gabbard
Students at Wadena-Deer Creek High School showed their character recently by organizing a series of fundraisers to help 17-year-old Zach Gabbard and his family.
The students raised $5,997 for the Gabbard family, which was presented to the Perham boys' basketball team during halftime of WDC's last home game of the season.
Students, staff and parents organized four fundraisers for Zach over the last several weeks. A five-piece Homecrest patio set, donated by the WDC Winter Athletics and families, sold at the Perham Benefit for $1,400. A fundraiser at a boy's basketball game raised $820, while the ZG3 orange wristbands sold by the Wolverine boys' basketball team and the WDC Student Council coin drive brought the total up to $5,997.
WDC Principal Tyler Church said he is proud of WDC students, parents and communities for coming together to support Zach and his family.
"Following last summer's tornado, we were able to see firsthand the generosity and kindness of others," Church said. "Our students recognize what was done for us, and it only made sense for them to help someone else in need. I am proud of our students for 'paying it forward' and doing just that."
