WDC music teacher bound for China
Nelson was selected as part of a consortium of 50 music educators from around the United States traveling to China. They will observe the music programs in elementary, high school and college settings, as well as look at what's required to be a licensed music teacher in Beijing and Shanghai. Nelson plans to bring new ideas back that she can incorporate into her music program at WDC.
Nelson is in her 30th year at WDC and is relishing the opportunity to travel internationally - a first for her. Nelson said it will take 16 hours to arrive in Hong Kong and then onto to Beijing and Shanghai.
Nelson spent six months raising money to fund her trip overseas, which included a turkey dinner fundraiser, selling cheesecakes and pies, private donations from individuals and businesses, as well as a grant from Five Wings Arts Council. She is also kicking in her own money to help fund the trip. Nelson is using personal and professional leave to cover her absence from Dec. 11 to 21.
Nelson will have a camera in tow during her trip, so watch for photos on the school's website when she returns at www.wdc2155.k12.mn.us.
