WDC Legion gains split with Staples
Tristan LeComte went 3-for-3 and scored three runs as the Wadena-Deer Creek American Legion gained a split with Staples June 1 in a season-opening twinbill.
Staples broke a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the seventh to win the first game 4-3. LeComte's big game triggered a 13-2 Wadena victory in Game 2.
Post 171 out-hit Staples 7-5 in the opener. Jake Krause homered and went 2-for-3. Zac Schertler and Thomas Brekke also collected two hits for WDC.
Mark Kossan went six innings on the mound for Staples to gain the win. Jalen Busker pitched an inning of relief in the seventh.
Mike Behl and Kyle Kern split time on the mound for WDC. Behl was tagged with the loss.
Joe Wallgren and Tanner Horn combined for a one-hitter as Wadena won the nightcap 13-2 in five innings.
Wallgren fanned four in two innings of work and gained the mound win. Horn threw shutout ball over the final three frames.
Jacob Swendsrud suffered the loss.
Staples committed six errors.
"I was proud of the way we battled back after losing a good first game and I was impressed by the way we hit the ball; although I was not surprised," said WDC Head Coach Kevin Tumberg. "This team has a lot of strong hitters and when our bats get going we are going to be tough."
