WDC launches fall sports practice
Monday was the day players and coaches have been looking forward to since the end of last season. Aug. 13 is the first day of official practices allowed by the Minnesota State High School League - and Wadena-Deer Creek Public Schools is looking forward to a new year, a new school and a new era.
WDC Activities Director Norm Gallant visited each of the opening-day practices and was very encouraged by the numbers and the energy.
"Our number of student-athletes (is) very good this year," he said. "The level of excitement from our kids and coaches is high. Everyone is looking forward to the fall season and school year."
Gallant was excited to see, for example, football was up by 10 players this year. He said the invitation for additional players to join is still open.
The football team is under new leadership this season, with Howie Kangas as the head coach. The Wolverines are learning a new offense as well as focusing on skills, discipline and conditioning. Their first game is Aug. 31 when they travel to Barrett to take on West Central Area.
The volleyball team will continue to practice at the elementary school as they have for the past two years since the June 2010 tornado destroyed the high school. Workers continue to make finishing touches on the new school.
The volleyball team is coming back from another stellar season, after finishing fourth in the state last fall. Head coach Sue Volkmann is prepping her team for their first match Aug. 30 when the Wolverines host Moorhead in the new gymnasium.
Vicki Smith, head coach of the girls' tennis team, is kicking off her season with intense practices to prepare for their Aug. 18 match at Park Rapids.
Both the boys' and girls' cross country teams will begin with more long-distance runs to build stamina. Head Coach Terry Olson prepares his student-athletes by getting them used to running and back into the mode of practicing every day. Their first meet is Aug. 27, when they travel to Morris.
The opening day of practice included 10 "spirited" individuals who will be on the cheering squad for WDC. Holly Becker serves as cheerleading adviser.
