WDC harriers gain numbers but suffer one big loss

Email

The Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines have had both good and bad news early in their 2014 cross country season.

The WDC harriers have seen their numbers more than double from the eight varsity runners they had in 2013. The rough news is that three-time state qualifier Emma Schmitz will not be back for her senior year.

Schmitz suffered a leg injury in a skiing accident and is still recovering from it. She has opted to pursue post-secondary work this fall. As a junior, Schmitz placed 69th in Class A competition with a time of 16:03.6. Schmitz turned in a 15:39.4 time at state as a sophomore.

Back in the fold after missing a season of cross country are seniors Tristin Godel, Brody Wangsness and Brianna Rosenthal.

Veterans joining the three upperclassmen will be juniors Briana Malone, Hannah Vorderbruggen and Jimmy Kim, sophomores Gabi Ross, Konnor Stueve and Noah Ross, freshman Tiffany Meeks and eighth-graders Abby Motschenbacher and Isaac Hale.

The Wolverines will open their season Monday, Aug. 25, at Staples. Park Rapids is expected to headline the field Sept. 2 when the Wolverines host the Johanna Olson Invitational at Whitetail Run.
